What We Do

Our mission is to educate, engage, and entertain the public on the streets of Old Sacramento
and within the Sacramento History Museum through the historical recreation of the individuals,
events, and activities of Sacramento’s rich history.

Keeping the past alive since 1995

No prior history knowledge necessary and all are welcome! All volunteers may utilize our costume closet to create your historic outfit or to augment your personal garments. If you would like to join the Living History program, please download and submit the SHA Volunteer Application found HERE.

We Bring History to Life

We are merchants, miners, doctors, proper ladies, soiled doves, blacksmiths. In short, we are the citizens of Sacramento City and we use the backdrop of Old Sacramento’s historic buildings and streets as a living street museum. Join us, won’t you?

Member Testimonials

“If you want to meet new people, have some fun at the many events that went on in the 1850's, and learn about proper attire and the history of Sacramento, then this is the group to join. And, if you so choose, it is also great for learning about acting in our annual event, "Ghost Tours", whether it be as an actor or a valuable behind the scenes worker.”
Kevin J. McGinnis
"I initially joined this group with some hesitation. My husband joined a year earlier and encouraged me to try it out. I soon realized SLH has something to offer everyone from acting in the "Ghost Tours", to crafting, to participating in events depicting life in the Gold Rush and beyond. The opportunities are endless and I'm so glad my husband convinced me to join."
Joan McGinnis
“When I was a teenager in Sacramento it was always a special treat to go down to “Old Sac”. I absorbed the history of the Gold Rush and always wanted to share my experiences there with anyone who would be visiting from out of state or country and anyone who would listen to me especially! My dream came true when I finally joined this Living History group. I was the future and I was the past.”

The Argonaut

Northern California pioneers were called Argonauts in reference to those in ancient Greek mythology who sailed with Jason in his quest for the Golden Fleece.

We honor the men and women who toiled in those gold fields with this, our newsletter, The Argonaut.
